John M. Poplawski, 87, Scranton, died April 19 in Abington Manor, South Abington Twp.
Born Jan. 28, 1931, in Scranton, son of the late Stanley Joseph and Clara Louise (Schreiber) Poplawski, he was educated in Scranton schools and later attended Scranton Prep with an interest in studying Latin so that he could enter a Trappist Monastery as a monk, where he stayed for two years. He then joined the United States Navy at the age of 19 and honorably served his country and survived a shipwreck at sea.
He is survived by a brother, Richard Poplawski, of Scottsdale, Ariz.
A Tridentine Latin Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 1 p.m. at St. Michael's RC Church, 1703 Jackson St., Scranton, by the Rev. Simon Harkins, FSSP. Interment with military honors will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
