Thomas William Sheehan, 83, of Dalton, died on Tuesday in Regional Hospital of Scranton.  He was the husband of the late Theresa "Terry" Catoggio.  The couple was married since June 24, 1978.

Born February 18, 1939 in Scranton, Thomas was the son of the late Thomas Gregory and Helen (Berge) Sheehan.

Tom was a 1957 graduate of Scranton Preparatory School and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Philosophy from the University of Scranton in 1961. He furthered his studies and was granted his Masters Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Scranton in 1968, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Kings College, Wilkes-Barre, Pa in 1976.  In addition, he participated in the recruit training program for the Scranton Police Department, and completed several training programs with the Pennsylvania State Police and other law enforcement agencies. 

Prior to retirement, Tom taught in the Abington Heights Middle School for over 21 years and 7 years at Waverly Elementary as a 6th grade teacher.  He had been a part time police officer for South Abington Twp and Dalton Borough from 1969 to 1975. Tom served honorably in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1961 to 1965, and U.S. Army Reserve Military Police and CID from 1976 to 1980. He had been an active volunteer with the Coast Guard Auxiliary as a Coast Guard Academy recruiter following 9/11. Tom was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Parish.

Surviving are two step sons: James Black (Suzanne) of Dalton, and John Black (Yvonne) of Dalton, two step daughters: Kim Keogh (Rick) of Kingsley and Terry Graham (Bill) of Chambersburg; one sister, Helen Sheehan of Scranton, 11 grandchildren,  5 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by two sisters, Sylvia Sheehan and  Mary Ann Carroll.

There will be a private family memorial service at a later date at the convenience of the family.
