Mary Rose Anne Smith, age 53, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at Regional Hospital of Scranton with her family by her side. She was born in Scranton on January 29, 1965 to Joseph C. and the late Giovina Salerno.
She attended Bishop Hannan High School and graduated from Marywood University and the Community Medical Center School of Nursing. She was the office manager of the Scranton Heart Institute.
In the business of saving lives, Mary Rose had an uncanny ability to touch people's hearts in a deep and positive way. She gave all of herself to her family, and until her final breath, she worked to ensure the comfort and security of others. She enjoyed running, reading biographies, traveling, and caring for her children. She collected glass angels and ocean sand from beaches around the world. She had an illustrious modeling career in her twenties, during which she appeared on the runway, in movies and television commercials, and in pageants. An active member of her community, Mary Rose frequently volunteered her time to improve the world around her. To name a few, she was the school nurse, cheerleading coach, baseball coach, soccer coach and chairperson of the American Heart Association's Heart Ball.
She is survived by her husband, Stafford, and her children, Noah, Tiffany, and Skyler. If she were here today, she would want you to know that "life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away."
Family and close friends are invited to a celebration of Mary Rose's life on Saturday, June 9, 2018 from noon to 4 p.m. at Mary Rose's home by invitation only. A benediction blessing will be offered by Father Carmen Perry at noon. Guests are encouraged to wear something bright yellow, Mary Rose's favorite color.
