Mary Durkin Payton, formerly of Dunmore, a resident of Lackawanna Health and Rehab Center, died Wednesday. She was the widow of the late Timothy D. Payton, who died in 2002. Her first husband, James E. Durkin, died in 1970.
Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and the late Florence (Phillips) Ryan. Educated in Scranton schools, she was a graduate of St. Patrick's High School. Before retirement, she was employed at the former Clinical Laboratories in Scranton.
She is survived by a son, James (Lynn) Durkin, of Basking Ridge, N.J.; four daughters, Judy (James "Moon") Kelly, Dunmore; Karen Durkin, Scranton; Eugenia "Gene" (John) Beirne, of Richmond, Va.; and Mary (Stephane) Cloutier, of Ludlow, Mass.; nine grandchildren, Brendan Kelly, Julie Miller, Cate Simpson, Bridget Bennett, Erin Durkin Lyon, Kelley Durkin Envik, Kathleen Dooley, Kaitlyn and Emily Harned; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by six brothers, Thomas, Joseph, John, Paul, Patrick and Ryan; and three sisters, Mildred Williams, Jeanne Saccone and Therese Ann Ryan.
The family offers sincere thanks to staff members of Lackawanna Health and Rehab Center for the care and many kindnesses shown to their mother.
The funeral will be Saturday, May 5, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., to be celebrated by Monsignor Neil J. Van Loon, at St. Paul's Church, 1500 Penn Ave., Scranton.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.
