Mary A. (Ward) DeAngelis, 95, Scranton, PA, died on Monday in Scranton, PA. She was the wife of the late Michael R. DeAngelis who died on August 31, 2007. The couple was married since May 7, 1960.
Born on March 26, 1927 in Bayonne, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late James and Anna (Boyle) Ward.
She attended Seton Hall University and worked as an Executive Assistant for the NY Telephone Company, where she had the opportunity to meet Eleanor Roosevelt who worked in the same building. She was an active member of Our Lady of the Mount Parish (OLM) in Warren, NJ, volunteered for Meals on Wheels, was President of the OLM Altar Rosary Society, and was an avid bowler. She enjoyed travelling and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She and her loving husband Mike were cherished by their children and grandchildren, and were known as “Nana and Pop-pop with the kisses.” Mary loved meeting people, and humbly served everyone she met with a beautiful smile and a sparkle in her eye. She had a deep sense of humor paired with Irish wit.
Surviving are three sons: Michael (Tricie) J. DeAngelis of Chalfont, PA, Charles (Traci) A. DeAngelis of Mountainside, NJ, and J. Ward (Kathleen) DeAngelis of Annandale, NJ; and two daughters: Karen (Dr. James J. III) McKenna of Clarks Green, PA and Patricia (Robert) D. Szipszky of Newtown Square, PA; two sisters: Eleanor Baro of Warren, NJ and Josephine Nugent of Clark, NJ; 17 grandchildren (Brendan, Connor, James, Meghan, Emily, Matthew, Alyssa, Chas, Patrick, Brooke, Sarah, Thomas, Ally, Michael, Jack, Brian, and Natasha); 4 great-grandchildren (Sullivan, Nolan, Madeline, and Patrick); nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Anna Ward; brother, Michael Ward; sister, Theresa Roach; and brother, Daniel Ward.
The DeAngelis family would like to thank Marywood Heights for the loving and exceptional care she received there. In particular, we express our love and sincere appreciation to Sister Kieran Williams, IHM, who ministered to Mary as a resident and also to her entire family as we prepared for Mary to pass to her heavenly reward. Mary’s favorite doctor was her son-in-law, Dr. James McKenna III, to whom the family is eternally grateful for his deeply personal and loving care for Mary.
The funeral will be on Friday at 11 am at Our Lady of the Mount Chapel, 170 Mt. Bethel Road, Warren, NJ, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated by Fr. Sean W. Kenney. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday from 10 – 11 am at the chapel. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Stony Hill Cemetery in Watchung, NJ.
