John William Stevens, 87, of Bonita Springs and Scranton, died on Monday at his home, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Betty Ann Fidiam Stevens, who died in 2011. The couple were married on Jan. 28, 1961 and enjoyed 50 years together.
Born July 29, 1936 in Scranton, John was the son of the late William and Mae (Gustin) Stevens. John graduated from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and established Stevens Pharmacy, which he ran for 35 years. After selling his pharmacy he became the director of pharmacy at Marion Community Hospital. During that time he was a member of The Tumor Board of Lackawanna County. In the early 70s he started John W. Stevens Realty. In the 80s John began yet another successful business, Alpha Video, which had multiple locations in Northeastern Pennsylvania. John was a longtime member of St. Ann Maronite Church in Scranton.
John loved the beach and was happy to make his home on Bonita Beach. He and Betty also traveled to the Caribbean often. He was an avid boater and loved fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. John took great pride in his family and was proud that he educated all of his children and provided the seed capital for them to start their own businesses.
Surviving one daughter and three sons, Attorney Marina Stevens Roach (Attorney Phillip Roach) of Naples, Fla.; William Stevens (Tara Shemonski), Dr. John Stevens (Kim Stevens) and Joe Stevens (Jaime Coggins), all of South Abington Twp. He loved his grandchildren, Nicholas and Elizabeth Roach, Jakob, Lauren, Vaughn and Harper Stevens.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Ann Stevens.
The funeral will take place on Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Ann Maronite Church, 1320 Price St., Scranton, with the Divine Liturgy to be celebrated. Interment, Sacred Heart Syrian Cemetery, Scranton. The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Jennings-Calvey Funeral and Cremation Services Inc., 111 Colburn Ave., Clarks Summit, PA.
