John D. Begley, 79, of Clarks Summit, died Saturday, in the Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit surrounded by his loving family after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Margaret "Peggy" (Coffey) Begley. They were married 53 years.
Born February 8,1945 in New York, NY. He was the son of the late James and Margaret (Lenihan) Begley. He honorably served his country in the US Army. John graduated from Bishop Loughlin High School and St. John’s University.
He retired as a managing partner of New York Life Insurance Company. He was a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of the Snows Parish.
John was active in many professional organizations during his career with New York Life, including serving as past president of the Scranton Association of Life Underwriters, The Northeastern Pennsylvania chapter of CLU and ChFC, The Estate Planning Council of Northeastern Pennsylvania and Scranton Rotary. He volunteered his time with Hospice of the Sacred Heart and Our Lady of Snows Church Annual Bazaar. Every Christmas season he and his grandchildren would ring the bell for the Salvation Army.
He loved to travel and especially enjoyed his annual trips with Peggy to Aruba and family trips to Cape May, NJ. He adored his family, especially his grandchildren. He could always be found in the stands at every sporting event and competition cheering them on.
Surviving, in addition to his loving wife, is daughter Jennifer (Tim) Seechock and son John (Amy) Begley Jr., grandchildren Kelly, Katie and Maggie Seechock and Anabella and Christopher Begley, brother James Begley (Alberta) and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister Kathleen Donohue.
The funeral will be on Saturday at 10am at Our Lady of the Snows Church, 301 S. State Street, Clarks Summit with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated. Interment to follow at Hickory Grove Cemetery, Waverly Township. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday from 4-7pm at Jennings-Calvey Funeral and Cremation Service, Inc., 111 Colburn Avenue, Clarks Summit.
