James E. Ryan

James Edmund Ryan, 91, of Clarks Summit, died on Thursday in Allied Services Hospice Center surrounded by his loving family, following a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Angelina M. Fasano, who died in 2014. The couple was married on October 12, 1957.

Born January 29, 1933 in New York City, New York, he was the son of the late James E. and Clara (Huyghue) Ryan.

Jim attended Chelsea High School in New York City and served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company where he worked for 42 years in various capacities in New York and at the MetLife Data Center in Clarks Summit. Jim was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Snows Church, a member of its Men's Club, and was a Third Degree Knight and a founding member of the Abington Knights of Columbus Council # 6611. He was a Life Member of the VFW.

While mostly devoting himself to family and friends, Jim enjoyed travelling, from family vacations at the Jersey Shore, to cruises and tours throughout the US, Canada, the Caribbean and Europe with his wife, siblings and friends. Jim was a voracious reader of books on history, biographies and spy thrillers. He enjoyed music, especially jazz and American classics, and loved to dance. He enjoyed volunteering in the community, and in his later years he picked up painting as a hobby.

He is survived by daughters Lorraine Ryan (Joseph Tufaro), Philadelphia, and Angela Ryan Pope (Allen), Tobyhanna; brothers John Ryan, Bloomington, IN, and Jeffrey Ryan (Jane), Carmel, NY; sisters Jacqueline Ruzzi (Michael), the Bronx, NY, and Jean Masino, Cornwall, NY; granddaughters Virginia Pope, Brooklyn, NY, and Elizabeth Pope, Bellefonte; and son-in-law Bernard Hoye, Skippack.

He was preceded in death by daughter Ellen Ryan Hoye, and brothers Joseph and Jerome Ryan.

Jim will be dearly missed by his large, extended family and many friends.

The funeral will take place on Friday at 9:30am at Our Lady of the Snows Church, 301 S. State Street, Clarks Summit, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated. Interment at Abington Hills Cemetery, S. Abington Twp., will follow. The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday from 5-7pm at the Jennings-Calvey Funeral and Cremation Service, Inc., 111 Colburn Avenue, Clarks Summit, PA 18411.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), www.dav.org.

The family is grateful to the caring staff and community of Clarks Summit Senior Living, where Jim happily called home since 2013, and for the excellent and compassionate care he received at Geisinger Community Medical Center and Allied Services Hospice Center.
