James Caparo

James J. Caparo (affectionately known as Chap by family and friends), 71, of South Abington Township, died at home Saturday, March 8, 2025, following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. His devoted wife, the former Karen Yurechko, was with him at his side. They were together for over 51 years.

Chap was born in Scranton on September 22, 1953 to the late Anthony and Mary (Yarima) Caparo. He graduated in 1971 from West Scranton Central Catholic High School.

Prior to retirement, Chap worked for over 32 years as an auto mechanic. His extensive knowledge and expertise in that field carried over into his personal hobby. He proudly restored a 1973 Plymouth Barracuda that he drove to many local and regional car shows and occasionally ran down the drag strip. He also acquired a 1973 Challenger that he restored for Karen. His recently completed project was the acquisition and modification of a 1973 MG Midget.

Chap was gifted in the area of electronics and wiring. In addition to rewiring the restored vehicles he recently repaired the receiver for the 1980 vintage stereo system he still used for playing LP records.

Chap was a long-time member of Our Lady of the Snows Parish. He was also a member of the National Hot Rod Association.

In addition to his wife, Chap is survived by a niece, Nicole Boice, and nephews, Tim and Jeff Zabielski. His canine companions, Lily and Loki, are lost without him. His sister, Patricia Zabielski, preceded him in death.

The funeral will take place on Monday at 9:30am at Our Lady of the Snows Church, 301 S. State Street, Clarks Summit, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated. Interment will be private at Cathedral Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends from 8-9am at Jennings-Calvey Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., 111 Colburn Avenue, Clarks Summit.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Griffin Pond Animal Shelter.
