Elizabeth "Betty" D. Sfarra

Elizabeth D. (Uzup) Sfarra, 84, formerly of Clarks Summit, passed away Monday in Regional Hospital of Scranton. She was the widow of the late Louis D. Sfarra, who died Dec. 30, 1990. The couple was married over 24 years.

Born Feb. 6, 1940, in Coaldale, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Elizabeth (Mischkauskas) Uzup. A 1957 graduate of Coaldale High School, she attended Business School in Easton. Betty is retired from Marywood University, where she worked in the student teaching department.

Betty was a faithful member of Our Lady of the Snows Parish where she was a Eucharistic minister. Active in her church, Betty was a member of the parish choir, the Friday morning company, and was a regular at the country bazaar and other parish events. Betty was instrumental in starting the Liturgy of the Word for Children and was a religious education teacher for the CCD program.

Betty always had a smile to share with those she met. A devoted wife and loving mother, she was always willing to lend a helping hand. Her sense of humor will be sadly missed by all her friends and loved ones.

Surviving are her son, Matthew Sfarra and his wife, Suzanne, and their daughter, Angelina, with whom Betty resided in Scranton.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Lisa Louise; two sisters, Josephine Madson and Mary Cempa; and two brothers, Anthony and Benjamin Uzup.

The funeral will be Tuesday, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Snows Church, 301 S. State St., Clarks Summit. The family will receive relatives and friends Tuesday from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at the Jennings-Calvey Funeral and Cremation Service Inc., 111 Colburn Ave., Clarks Summit, PA 18411.
