Alice Marie (Dunleavy) O'Connell, 78, of Clarks Summit, died Monday at Moses Taylor Hospital after a brief illness. She was the widow of Jerry O'Connell, who died July 24, 2003. The couple was married for more than 47 years.Born March 8, 1935, in Scranton, daughter of the late Gerald and Cecelia (McHale) Dunleavy, she was a graduate of Holy Rosary High School. Before her retirement in 2003, she was employed by the Abington Heights High School as a teacher's aide. Most of her professional career, she was an assistant for area accountants. She was a member of the Church of St. Gregory, Clarks Green.Alice Marie was a gentle woman who adored her family, and the best of times were spent with them. She encouraged and looked forward to many family gatherings. She especially enjoyed the friendship of the women in her card club of 45 years. Her kind and gentle smile will be missed by all who knew and loved her.Surviving are five daughters, Marie Woody, and husband, Joe, Dalton; Lauri O'Connell, Clarks Summit; Erin Hansell and husband, Richard, Gilbertsville; Colleen O'Connell, Sarasota, Fla.; Sharon Gibbs and husband, Thomas, Justus; as well as 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.She was also preceded in death by a sister, Jane Logan; and a brother, Paul.The funeral will be Saturday from the Church of St. Gregory, 330 N. Abington Road, Clarks Green, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family in Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Friends may call Friday, 4 to 7 p.m., at the Jennings-Calvey Funeral and Cremation Service Inc., 111 Colburn Ave., Clarks Summit.
